Notes from the President to the Board of Trustees covering an array of issues and topics taking place from the named date range. Fall term is under way now, and the President is bringing the Board of Trustees up to date on her activities over the last month and a half. Enrollment issues might become a concern. The Washington On-line Associate Degree courses for fall of 1998 have been fully enrolled with over 350 enriollments in 17 sections of 9 courses. Tacoma Community College is in the second year of performance funding by the state. $133,000.00 is being withheld until the college can demonstrate progress in certain areas. The 1999-2001 Operating Budget Request is coming up and President Transue has been working on developing strategies for the bienniel budget through WACTC. The State Board and the Community and Technical Colleges will be requesting $205 million in capitalfunds. The college has received word from Olympia that the growing Asian and world economic cris is beginning to have an impact on revenue forecasts for the state of Washington. On September 28, President Transue had an opportunity to join with Rep. pat Lantz and other interested educational partners at a luncheon Pat and her supporters organized at the Gig harbor Inn. Governor Locke was in attendance. The college is scheduled for their 5-year mid-term accreditation visit by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The TCC WorkFirst program continues to be successful in providing training to members of the community. Staffing and salary levels are under review at the college. Staff diversity versus student population will be a topic of discussion at the President's Council on Diversity, and a WorkForce analysis has been put together and presented. October 23 was Jan Miller's last day as the Director of Human resources for the Tacoma Community College. The TCC Foundation has received approximately $700,000 in support of the 1st Generation Scholarship Program and has the Toast to the Northwest coming up on November 21. On September 9 President Transue met with David Graybill to discuss various TCC and Chamber joint initiatives. On September 10 and 11, President Transue attended a retreat at Seabeck, Washington. This was organized by faculty with arranged topics for breakaways. TACTC held a meeting on September 11, and President Transue was in attendance, and held meetings with several individuals. 1998 Pre-Instruction Week activities are highlighted across several paragraphs. On September 16 the Pierce County Coordinating Council met at pierce College to discuss the legislative candidate breakfast, the joint survey of workforce training needs, and new educational alliances. On September 18, President Transue attended a potluck hosted by Kathi Hiyane-Brown for the new faculty hired this year. On October 8, President Transue held a reception at her house for first and second year faculty. On October 12, President Transue hosted a get-together for managers and administrators at her house. On September 19, President Transue attended an all-day Washington Higher Education Roundtable Summit session organized by the legislature as a follow-up to the discussion in Spokane last spring. President Transue was invited by the Education Services Officer at Fort Lewis to visit and see their new higher education facility. In September, President Transue was able to attend the ACCT Conference in San Francisco. President Transue is pleased with the progress the college is making working with their consultant, the Kerr-Kechter firm, on a business and marketing plan for continuing education. The college is experiencing a major shift in their vision for continuing education. On September 28, President Transue attended a reception and dinner sponsored by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). The Boeing Company was present, TCC received honors from Boeing. On September 29, at the University of Puget Sound, the Fall Board Meeting of the Pleneurethics Society was held absent Richard Bangs Collier, who is experiencing poor health. The results of the Climate Survey should be turned over to Board members if they have not received them already. On October 1-2, WACTC held a meeting at Grays harbor College. President Transue is serving as the Vice-Chair of the Operating Budget Committee. On October 6,The Pierce County Coordinating Council held the Annual legislative breakfast. On October 6, twenty-seven managers and staff attended an all-day training provided by a law firm under contract with the state, on human resources issues. From October 13-15, President Transue attended her last meeting of the ACE International Education Commission in Washington D.C. On December 4-5, the Board of Trustees will hold a winter retreat. They will meet at Silverdale, near Bremerton, Washington. On October 21, President Transue attended a meeting of the Northwest International Education Association at Pacific Lutheran University. On October 21, The College Council also met to discuss a variety of items including how to acknowledge students who die while enrolled at the college. One of our TCC students was recently murdered at Titlow Park and the college would like to recognize him. The Multi-Cultural Advisory Council met on October 22. The President's Council on Diversity met to discuss their visions and goals, this meeting entry is not dated. On October 23, The State-wide Meeting of payroll personnel Staff was held and President Transue had the opportunity to provide welcoming remarks. Equipment allocations are under discussion with the college Budget Committee, the College Council and the instructional and college services administrative staff to complete full allocation for the year. The college has approved repairs of HVAC systems to combat failures in Buildings 3, 13, and 21. President Transue delivers remarks on 'Other items of Interest.'

President Transue encloses a copy of an article on Rolling Stone Magazine on Community Colleges, one of which was Bellevue Community College. This reproduction articles is attached at the back of this packet by paperclip.
