Notes from the President to the Board of Trustees ccovering an assortment of recent activities of import. From October 25-27, the National Meeting of COMBASE and NCCET was held in Portland, Oregon. President Transue and the Dean for Business and Continuing Education attended this event. That following Tuesday, President Transue traveled directly from Portland to the Washington Presidents' Group at Big Bend Community College at Moses Lake. On November 2, President Transue addressed the Classified Staff organization, and presented some statistics. On November 2, president Transue met with Ray Corpuz to discuss the college's challenges and priorities and to discuss TACID. A New Associate Dean for the Division of math and Sciences - Mike Flodin. A November 3 quarterly report was recieved at the Quarterly Studies Session. On November 5 and 6, President Transue attended the AACC Board Meeting in Washington D.C. President Transue is continuing to serve on a study commission to solicit support for the Arts. On November 11, President Transue and Lilly Warnick met with the Intel Corporation to discuss mutual interests and plans, including some collaboration with Intel. President Transue begins her meetings with legislators. Jan Miller leaves the Tacoma Community College, and TCC is now looking for it's next Director of Human Resources. President Transue reports that the increasing non-competitive nature of exempt staff salaries at the college has become a serious problem. On November 12, President Transue met with The Senior Assistant Attorney General in charge of Community and Technical College services. On November 16, President Transue and Lilly Warnick met with the publisher of the News Tribune and the Community Relations Director to discuss the possibility of a donation to the 'Generation Scholars' program. On November 10, a delegation from Tacoma's sister city of George, South Africa arrived at TCC, seeking to develop a closer relationship and learn about the function of Tacoma Community College. The college is fielding lots of questions about the impact of Initiative 200 and how it will impact the institution. On November 17 the TCC Foudnation Board met. Toast to the Northwest was held on Saturday, November 21 at the Tacoma Dome. On November 19, President Transue was invited by Earl Hale to be part of a small delegation of people presenting the community and technical college system request to Governor Locke. The News Tribune has run an article on the front page of the November 7, 1998 edition on Richard Bangs Collier, founder of the Pleneurethics Society. On November 8 Art Popham wrote an article on the college's customized training initiative and the new Center for Business and professional Development. On october 26, The News Tribune published an article written by Andy Lingwall from TCC's Public Information Office. On November 19, president Transue had an opportunity to meet with the college's CIMS advisory committee. Someone has put a "For Sale" sign up at the corner of 12th and Mildred, making it appear as though the college is up for grabs. November 3 audit exit interviews with state auditors. On November 25, President Transue met with Earl Hale, Director of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, to discuss upcoming legislative strategies. On November 30, President Transue had a meeting with Terry Lindquist, Superintendent of the Puget Sound Education Service District. On December 3, the Multicultural Advisory Council met, the main topic being the impact of I-200. President Transue has been asked to serve on an Ad Hoc Task Force on Operating Costs for the State Board. A WACTC meeting was held from December 3-4, with the presidents group meeting at Green River Community College, and topics include facilities studies, capital needs,the governor's budget request, and more. On December 2, Montserrat Linkletter, one of the college faculty members, and President Transue met with a representative of the Spanish Embassy to discuss the potential for faculty exchanges with select institutions in Spain. On December 7, President Transue attended a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pierce county Education Consortium. The News Tribune has published on article on First Generation Students. The Publicity for the program is considered very valuable for the college. President Transue is pleased to announce the hiring of Ricardo leyva-Puebla as Director of Multicultural Student Services. On December 11, TCC held its annual Holiday Luncheon and Service Awards celebration. On Saturday, December 12, president Transue attended a meeting of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Colleges that have contracts with the Deparment of Corrections to run education programs in prisons have received a letter cutting the indirect cost rate from 12.97% to 8% and eliminating a number of positions. President Transue and other leaders from community and technical colleges are meeting with the DOC to map out strategies.
