Notes from the President to the Board of Trustees, December 16, 1998-January 27, 1999
Scope and Contents
President Transue has continued her one-on-one meetings with legislators from the college's district to discuss agendas for the current session. On December 17 President Transue met with Representative Gigi Talcott and Senator Lorraine Whojahn. Norma Whitacre, the Associate Dean of the Gig Harbor/Peninsula Center, has been offered and has accepted a position as Vice President for a variety of services at Cascadia Community College. Doctor Yoswa Gwalamubisi, the Director of our Education program at the Washington Corrections Center for Women is leaving for another position. Jan Miller has left the college for a position with the public schools. January 4 executive staff meeting with members of the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges to discuss WorkFirst. problems with the DoC and cost-cutting methods for prison education. President Transue is serving on the executive committee of the Pierce County Education Consortium. Employee complaint regarding unsafe working conditions during the night and on weekends, a lack of security to protect essential staff. On January 8, president Transue met with presidents from Pierce College, Bates Technical College, and Clover Technical College. They were joined by members of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. From April26-27 there will be an accreditation visit. On January 13, the college had the first legislative task force meeting of the year. the Pleneurethics Society Board Meeting was held on January 13 at the UW-T campus. President Transue had a meeting with Senator Rosa Franken on the afternoon of January 13. Norm Rice, former Mayor of Seattle spoke at the Student Center on January 14 to give a talk in connection with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On January 14, the President's Council for Cultural Diversity met to discuss clarification of recruiting materials in regard to 'Initiative 200.' The Major National Convention for English Departments see's TCC's wages considered 'non-competitive.' On January 15, a number of people from different organizations, together with President Transue, held a meeting with the News Tribune Editorial Board. On January 19, President Transue attended the celebration of Dr. Yoswa Gwalamubisi on the occasion of his retirement from the college. On January 19, the TCC Faculty met to review the legislative agenda. On January 19, Preisdnet Transue testified before the House Appropriations Committee on the issue of compensation in the 1999-2001 biennium, causing the college faculty retention issues. State Board Budget Task Force meetings were held on January 20 in Olympia. On January 20, a meeting with President Transue and Bill Mohler, President of Bates Technical College to discuss a closer institutional connection. On January 23, President Transue attended the Executive Committee meeting of the COMBASE board in Dallas, Texas. On January 25, President Transue met with the Institutional Effectiveness Council to talk about a follow up to the climate survey conducted in the previous year, and to discuss progress on the institutional effectiveness plan.
