Memorandum to the Board of Trustees from Pamela Transue with an email attachment announcing the unexpected death of Alberta Canada, a long-time member of the Tacoma Community College Board of Trustees.

Notes from the President to the Board of Trustees One Stop Presidents' Meeting at Clover Park to discuss One-Stop employment and training centers around Pierce County. On March 15 the Clover Park Technical College and Tacoma Community college Joint Executive Council Meeting explored possibilities for joining with other colleges in the area to employ a professional lobbyist in support of institutional priorities. On the afternoon of March 15, all of the management staff of Tacoma Community College was involved in a training session on the state's ethics policies. On March 15, Department of Corrections negotiations were held on a conference call with seven community college presidents with officials from the Department of Corrections (DoC). On March 16 the Foundation board met, and Dan Small and President Transue made a presentation on their legislative agenda and bill status. Julie Buffington departs the college. College council Meeting met on March 17, topics include a campus climate survey, and a mid-year allocation of equipment funds. On March 17, the Colleges budget commission met to discuss the budget development schedule for 1999-2000. On March 18, a meeting with a consultant from the DoC on the issue of contracts was held. On March 22, President Transue addressed the South Tacoma Rotary on the mission of community and technical colleges. Dan Small and President Transue also had a meeting with Bates Technical College on Cable Television Access. On March 23, President Transue addressed a conference for people with disabilities seeking employment. On March 24, Washington Association of Community and Technical College (WACTC) Presidents Operating Budget Committee meeting held with a number of topics on the agenda. A morning meeting with Tom Huff who presented the House Republican budget for Community and Technical Colleges. WACTC Business Meeting held to endorse a grant to the U.S. Department of Education from Washington On-line (community and technical college distance education network), private industry councils and the Pierce County Presidents. The DoC budget is reduced from $1.9 million to $784,000. An effort to develop funding for Professional Development. The college is in the final stage of hiring a new Professional Development Coordinator. Dan Small's office has developed a set of materials to use in discussions with leaders in the community. On March 29, President Transue met with the Associate Deans and the members of the screening committees for the college's faculty hiring proces. On March 31, President Transue held a continuation of an earlier meeting with the represenattives of the Black Student Union and Black Men United. On April 1, President Transue met with the college consultant regarding the Center for Business and Professional Education. On April 1, President Transue met with several members of the executive staff to discuss enrollment management strategies. Early April legislative updates from Olympia's House Capital Committee budget is positive. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) held a board meeting from April 6-7. AACC Membership Committee meetings are held to discuss several policy recommendations and organizational recommendations. A New expeditions project will be funded by the Kellogg Foundation. Jeremy Rivken is mentioned regarding a book on bio-engineering. On April 7, President Transue attended the National Council on Continuing Education and Training (NCCET) board meeting to discuss developments in the study of lifelong learning. President Transue has an opportunity to 'schmooze' for days. Community College Humanities Association meeting o discuss developing a Humanities Institute. Clarence Page, a known journalist, spoke on the essays 'Showing My Color: Impolite Essays on Race.' This was a highly regarded event. On April 8, President Transue attended a breakfast honoring Phi Theta Kappa student leaders. The AACC outstanding alumni included James Belushi, actor, and Rita Mae Brown, author. Bruce FaBrizio, CEO of Simple Green, was recognized as well. COMBASE, a group of about 50 community colleges held a meeting to establish priorities for the following years. From April 12-14, Tacoma Community College hosted a delegation from sister college Guanxgi Teachers College in China. Fortuitously, at the Student Center, a speaker who was stationed in China during World War II attended, and was reputedly good friends with communist leader Mao Zedong. He was imprisoned by Stalin as an American spy. The following summer, two faculty members from TCC will travel to Nanning, China to teach. On April 14 the Multicultural Advisory Council met, and heard presentations from the Black Student Union and Black Men United. President Transue has been holding discussions with representatives from both groups regarding campus climate. There are plans for a site at the Tacoma Mall. On April 14 the Institutional Effectiveness Council met to review workforce data and placement rates. The President's Council on Diversity met on April 13, reviewing discussions made regarding campus climate issues by members of Black Men United and the Black Student Union. TCC Foundation: Needs Assessment Survey is being conducted to determine fundraising priorities. A Joint TCC/UW-T Executive Staff Meeting will be held to include discussion on potential joint efforts. Vice President Kathi Hiyane-Brown is on leave. A copy of a letter President Transue sent to the House Capital Committee concerning the House Capital Budget is enclosed. An All Faculty Meeting was held to discuss opportunities for greater faculty involvement in academic policy formulation. The TCC Childcare Center has a long waiting list to get in, and the quality of service is considered positive.
