Scope and Contents

The Notes from the President to the Board of Trustees for June 11, 1998 begins with an overview of students' events and activities, including scholarship events, goals for the student published newspaper, awards luncheons, foundation events, and more. faculty hiring announcements cover new opportunities for employment in a number of departments. Faculty Achievement AWards were held on April 13. On May 12 a reception was held for retiring faculty, with a college retirement reception held on June 4. On June 2 the college hosted an All Faculty Meeting to discuss issues of general interest. On May 5 Tom Huff visited the campus and met with President Transue, and discussions on interactive distance learning and Running Start were had. They also talked about the Tacoma Community College's Future Focus program. On May 6 President Transue met with Jan Vance, whoi is in charge of the Educational Services provided at Fort Lewis. On may 7 President Transue met with Dr. Dean Glawe, Dean of the WSU campus in Puyallup. On May 22 President Transue met with Betsy Brenner, new Publisher of the News Tribune, a syndicated Tacoma newspaper outlet. On June 3 President Transue met with Jack Creighton, recent CEO of the Weyerhauser corporation and current serving chair of the Governors' 20/20 Commission on Education.

An overview of major meetings is included as well, and the list includes the AACC National Meeting, WACTC/TACTC Spring Meetings, WACTC Retreats, workshops on diversity, a higher education summit, and a meeting with the State Comunity college facilities Council. President Transue and Kathi Hiyane-Brown examine ways in whic hthey can reorganize and structure the instructional administration more efficiently. Budget planning for the fiscal year of 1998 is underway. Operational Budget Funding announcements are made. Enrollment, vacation and a trip to China to cement our relationship with Guangxi Teachers College in Nanning. The notes wrap up with a final board appointment report.
