Biographical note
Jack Hyde was one of the first instructors hired by Tacoma Community College when it opened its doors in 1965. A University of Washington graduate with a masters in Geology, he returned to UW on a sabbatical from TCC, and finished his doctorate. An experienced volcanologist, he spent several years studying Mount Saint Helens. Each summer he would lead a group of students on a geology field-trip class around the western United States. He served TCC as the Math-Science Division Chairman. His interest in the environment lead him into the world of politics, where he served as a Tacoma city councilman.
