Data Supplementing an Application for a Community College in Tacoma, 1963
Scope and Contents
A report/supplemental data submitted to the State Board of Education by the Tacoma Public Schools in support of the standing application (submitted in 1961) to create Tacoma Community College. According to Dale Coleman's The Open Door: A History of Tacoma Community College (2015), the section headings of this report directly correspond to criteria created by the Washington State Legislature to determine appropriate communities for new colleges (15).
The bound volume contains correspondence between state and institutional personnel, resolutions from the Board of Directors, commentary from advisory committees, including state boards. Excerpts and articles from newspapers, interviews with educators, comparisons by census divisions of major areas in the metropolitan area of Tacoma, data on transportation, population, local school enrollment, and surveys of prospective students. Two copies.
